  • Antique American redwork quilt dating to approximately 1910–1930
  • Measures approximately 80” x 80”
  • Constructed in a classic red and white color palette
  • Features numerous hand-embroidered redwork motifs scattered throughout the white field
  • Embroidered designs include children, animals, flowers, a rooster, horse, fisherman and other charming pictorial scenes
  • Several motifs incorporate words and sentimental sayings, including “Lead Kindly Light,” “Scatter Seeds of Kindness,” and “The Lord Is My Shepherd”
  • Embroidery appears to have been worked from period transfer or stamped patterns, a popular form of needlework during the early 20th century
  • Finished with a wide solid red inner border and white outer border
  • Entire quilt is densely hand quilted with a combination of diagonal crosshatching, circular/rosette motifs and other decorative quilting designs
  • Red binding finishes the outer edge
  • Lightweight to medium-weight construction with the wonderful soft texture and puckering associated with an old hand-quilted textile
  • Overall condition is very good for its age with expected signs of use and age
  • One small localized area of fabric loss is present in the white ground near an embroidered fisherman motif, exposing the darker interior layer beneath; surrounding fabric remains intact
  • Minor age-related discoloration, faint spotting and general surface wear may be present throughout
  • Embroidery remains remarkably strong with good red color and detail
  • No major tears or widespread fabric loss noted
  • A beautiful example of early American decorative needlework and a striking piece for use on a bed, folded over a chair or bench, displayed on a quilt rack, or hung as textile art
